She whipped the little sports car into an inconspicuous parking space; not too far, not too close. Taking a deep breath and moment to center her thoughts, she gripped the steering wheel with a strength it would never have expected had it been capable of thinking. She put her earpiece in.
“Alright, here’s the deal. All you have to do is charm some worthless, unfortunate clerk into mentioning that diamond studded piece you’ve been looking for. If my connections are telling the truth, and they better be if they know what’s good for ‘em, it was sold at a black market auction on Friday to one Vincent Penn, who just happens to be the owner of this store and well known in the area of underhanded dealings. If it’s in that safe, we can bust the whole operation tonight.” Explained the voice of Justin Travis, her trusty assistant and all around tech genius.
Stepping out of her vintage red convertible, she was no longer Clara Mason. She was Sasha Meredith Jacques and she was looking to have a watch repaired. A watch belonging to her rich well known, business man of a fiancée. With a confident stride to mach her tailored, stylish outfit, she strode toward the jewelry store. Stopping only briefly as a gentleman opened the door for her, she entered the building.
Taking in her surroundings at a glance, she fixed her eyes on the far counter where a young clerk was busily shining a glass display case. Ten steps inside the building. It can’t be that hard to escape. Wonder what type of security systems they’ve got. “Just tapped their security system.” Came the voice of Justin through her earpiece. Obviously not a very good one if he broke the code that quick.
A winning smile on her face, she headed toward the clueless clerk. “Hello.” Lovely smile.
“H-hi…What can I do for you ma’am?”
Time to pick up the southern belle accent. “Well, you see sweetheart, my fiancée went out of town on a business trip and you know what? He managed to break the glass on the brand new watch I bought him for his birthday! I declare I don’t know how he manages to break things so often. He can be such a clumsy clod sometimes. But anyway, I’d like to get this-“She produced the watch from a side pocket in her designer purse. “Fixed up as good as new by the time he gets home from his most recent trip on Monday. Can you do that for me, darlin’?”
“Uh…sure. Can I see it?”
Handing the broken watch to him, she babbled on about the weather and the flip flops she just had to have and her daddy needing a vacation, bless his heart. All the while, skillfully indentifying all of the hidden cameras and they’re exact position.
“Damn it! Clara, our new friends from the other night, you know, the ones who tried to kill you, are looking for the piece as well. I just got word they’re taking the direct approach and robbing the store right before it closes so it looks like some small timers trying to make it big time. The worst part is the police got an anonymous tip about the store being robbed and they’re heading out right now. You need to get out of there and fast.”
If they catch me here, they’ll arrest me and find out details later. All the police know is that I tried to steal a priceless piece of jewelry last week. I’m a criminal to them. Sometimes being this deep undercover isn’t a good place to be. They already think I’m working with those hustlers who tried to kill me. I’ve got to get out of here without causing any suspicion.
As if on cue, her phone started ringing. Trusty Justin, he’s always got a way out.“Hello? Darling! How are you? I’ve been just dying to see you again. What’s that? What do you mean they booked the wrong entrée’s for the rehearsal dinner? How in the- Wait, you know what? I’ll head over there right now.” Hanging up, she gave the clerk an apologetic look “Look honey, I really wanted you to fix this for me but I haven’t got time to get all the paperwork filled out and such. I’ve just got to get this wedding stuff settled. I declare, no man will ever understand how hard it is on a woman to have to plan a wedding all by herself. My wedding planner is just no help at all! She never understands what I’m saying and she never just gets the vision for what I want.”
“It’ll just take a moment, I can get this fixed as goo-“
“I’m sorry sweetie, I really have to go. Thanks anyway.” Smile with your eyes. Give him the “If I wasn’t engaged” look. Come on Justin, call me again. Ah, good job. “Hello? Yes! Oh darlin’ I know. I’m heading there right this instant to get it all settled …“
She turned on her heel and forced herself to walk like a woman more concerned with braised pork and poached salmon than mortal danger and a potential gunfight. She barely made it to her car as the first police car pulled in. Well that was close.
